Assignment 1 : MySpace vs. Facebook by Yeo Sze Siew, HK2006-3420, HC05

First of all, what is MySpace? And what is Facebook? MySpace, which is a popular social networking website, offers its users an interactive, user-submitted network of friends, personal profiles, blogs, photos, videos, groups and music. MySpace provides a few of features on multimedia contents such as MySpaceIM which is an instant messenger where users are able to get instant notification of new MySpace messages, comments, friend requests, and others. MySpace Karaoke is a service that allows users to upload their own audio recordings onto their profile page. MySpace Mobile is another feature that allows the users to access MySpace content on their mobile phone whether to edit profile, view the profiles of other members and so on. The pro of Myspace is that it allows for multimedia communication such as videos, audios, music, games, pictures and others for entertainment options. However, there are several cons of MySpace which is when loading high graphic pages, MySpace will be a bit much slower. Besides, some of the music and others have a hard time to run through Myspace.

Facebook is considers as another social networking website or a social utility which allows its users to join networks organized by city, workplace, school, and region to connect and interact with other people. One’s can use Facebook to add friends, send messages, upload unlimited photos, update their personal profile, share videos, and others. There are several interesting features provided by Facebook for their registered users to interact with. For example, Photo application is one of the most popular applications on Facebook where users can upload albums and photos. Furthermore, Gifts allows users to send virtual gifts to their friends.

So, what the difference between MySpace and Facebook regarding to multimedia review? Based on my findings on articles that I have reviewed, I have written down some comments at below.

Opinion: Using MySpace and Facebook as business tools

Review of articles:

There is one significant difference between two of the websites which is the level of customization. MySpace allows their users to customize their profiles using HTML and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), while Facebook only allows plain text. By comparing both of the two websites, one’s can found that Facebook is less entertaining which meant that its pages are somewhat boring. MySpace is better if one’s is looking for entertainment and new technology as it contains more multimedia contents with lots of movement and bright colours. From the article by Matt Veres, he mentioned that MySpace is a lot more customizable because can use html to customized background, add pictures, and even upload videos. MySpace provides a built-in blog which allows users to express themselves. By using youtube.com service with MySpace, users can upload videos into the profile. All this cannot be done with facebook.

Another article named MySpace versus Facebook: Which one is much more better? This article is by McMillen which published on May 11, 2007 claimed that there are several categories to take consider between MySpace and Facebook. First one is the personal flair. MySpace makes their users easy to personalize their page where Facebook pages look all the same for most of the part. This is because MySpace allows users to add videos, songs, and animated photo albums. By using MySpace, it helps to learn little a bit about HTML too. The second category is about picture part. Facebook makes it very easy to upload albums where MySpace users have to upload photos separately and takes longer times if compared to Facebook. The third one is the commenting category where MySpace provides diversity of filetypes to use in the comments.

Another comparing category is finding friends. On Facebook, it is easier to find friends by searching using real first and last name or by school, town, groups and other people’s friends easily. There is also a list section which shown in common friends on Facebook. The last one is the security category. On Facebook, users never received spam or junk mail on their account if compared to MySpace. For some reason, hackers can invade profiles with viruses more readily in MySpace.

Conclusion :
Both of the two website have their pros and cons from multimedia reviews. I agreed with both the authors' opinion that MySpace is better. This is because MySpace contains multimedia content. It also supports most of the media type if compared to Facebook.
